Extra SceneSix Months Later. The curtain rises to show the currently well-dressed Younger family stood in a beautiful garden, surrounded by many different kinds of flowers. Joined by them was ASAGAI, dressed in a fine suit. BENEATHA stood across from him, wearing a pale pink dress that reached her knees, matched with a thin veil that fell to her shoulders, outlining her now curly black hair. Her hands were enclosed within his, and they stood under a white painted arch, specially made for the occasion.  Walter (formally).  Dearly beloved: We are gathered here today in the presence of God to witness and bless the joining together of this man and this woman in Holy Matrimony. The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity; and, when it is God’s will, for the procreation of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of the Lord. Therefore marriage is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it was instituted by God. Into this holy union, Mr. Joseph Asagai and Ms. Beneatha Younger now come to be joined. If any of you can show just cause why they may not lawfully be married, speak now; or else for ever hold your peace. (Pauses for a moment)Beneatha (impatient). Walter Lee, we are the only ones here, get on with it!Walter.   Okay. (Turns to BENEATHA) Do you, Beneatha Younger, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, through sickness and health, in God’s holy name?Beneatha. I do.Walter (Turns to ASAGAI). And do you, Joseph Asagai, take this women to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, through sickness and health, in God’s holy name?Asagai. I do.Walter. Rings, anyone? (Looking to RUTH, MAMA and TRAVIS)Beneatha (In a harsh whisper). Travis, the rings.           (TRAVIS comes to attention and reaches into his suit pocket, pulling out a pillow with two silver rings laced onto it. He hands one of each to BENEATHA and ASAGAI) Walter. Okay… Beneatha, if you would please repeat after me. With this ring, I, Beneatha Younger, take you, Joseph Asagai, to be my lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God’s holy law, and this is my solemn vow.Beneatha. With this ring, I, Beneatha Younger, take you, Joseph Asagai, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God’s holy law, and this is my solemn vow. (Slips ring onto ASAGAI’s finger)Walter (turns to ASAGAI). With this ring, I, Joseph Asagai, take you, Beneatha Younger, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God’s holy law, and this is my solemn vow.Asagai. With this ring, I, Joseph Asagai, take you, Beneatha Younger, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God’s holy law, and this is my solemn vow. (Slips ring onto BENEATHA’s finger)Walter. Then with all of the power invested in me, (jokingly) which I must warn you, isn’t very much, I now pronounce you Man and Wife.                       (ASAGAI and BENEATHA share a short but passionate embrace, before pulling back and looking at the rest of the Youngers.)  Mama. My little girl, married at last. (Wipes falling tear with handkerchief)Beneatha. Awh, Shush Mama.
