Gun control has been the main topic up for debate throughout the United States, gun control is necessary in order to have people feel safe. This topic has grown popularity because events such as shootings have taken place. At these events many lives have been taken for unnecessary reasons. Due to the unfortunate events that have occurred recently, people have become a little more biased because these tragedies are fresh in their mind. Their are also people who still have the mindset of being against gun control. Events such as the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting has given those pro gun control a strong  argument. Many pro gun control argue that many school shootings are a result of our country’s lack in gun control and letting these guns fall into the wrong hands. Those who do not support gun control show they are for violence and are not thinking in terms of safeness for anyone. Those against gun control stating  “guns aren’t killing people the people are killing people” is to general to argue against gun control.  It is proven with facts that gun control is a solution to stop gun violence. In a country without laws that would establish a “gun control”  anyone could own a gun. The government needs to put stricter gun control laws in place in order for more innocent lives to be saved. When trying to purchase a gun a strong standard background check and a medical Little 2background check must be in place.  Although there are some laws in place firearm auctions have a loophole when they refer to the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, this allows anyone, even convicted criminals, to purchase guns without a background check (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/gun-policy/). Gun control establishes boundaries without it everyone is put at risk.Another reason gun control needs to be in place is because if not, a person unable to tell apart right and wrong could get a hold of a gun and seriously hurt or even kill someone. Dr. Alan Heister speaks about the horrible Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting he states, “Adam Lanza’s actions are explained solely as a manifestation of mental illness” (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-alan-heisterkamp/guns-mental-illness-masculinity_b_2319795.html). Adam Lanza is the man who walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed twentysix innocent people. If there were stricter gun control laws then maybe this horrible Sandy Hook Elementary shooting could have been prevented. If as a country we did not put stricter laws on gun control we would be foolish, having this occur is unforgivable. Based on all current events the laws that are currently in place now do not have a strict enough hold on gun control.Being pro-gun control is a smarter way of thinking just due to the safety it can have on citizens in our country/tourists.  It is unsafe for anyone to have a gun without any knowledge on the person and their background. Also no matter if you’re trained or not it is unsafe to walk around, armed, at all times. It was shown in a study that, “rather than being used for self-defense, guns in Little 3the home are 22 times more likely to be involved in accidental shootings, homicides, or suicide attempts. For every one time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were 4 unintentional shootings, 7 criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides” (Kellermann, A. L., “Injuries and Deaths due to Firearms in the Home”). Keeping a gun in your home can lead to accidental shooting causing injuries or death. According to New Yorkers Against Gun violence, “Rather than being used for self-defense, guns in the home are 22 times more likely to be involved in accidental shootings, homicides, or suicide attempts. For every one time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were 4 unintentional shootings, 7 criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides” (http://nyagv.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Accidental-Shootings-NYAGV.pdf). By putting laws in place and having people enforce them will lower any gun related incidents. Many people against gun  control use the argument that gun control takes away their 2nd amendment right.  Arguing that gun control would take away the American people the one thing we love the most: freedom. The second amendment states   “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (www.law.cornell.edu/wex/second_amendment). This claim has been also backed up by supreme court case, The District of Columbia vs. Heller in 2008.  Dick Heller had been a police officer for many years. Heller had been authorized to carry a handgun while on the job in DC.  Heller was denied by the lower court, when he requested to bring his handgun home with him (http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/heller_denied_dc_gun_permit/). Heller decided to bring this Little 4matter to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court’s ruling five to four in favor of Heller is based of the facts that the laws were unconstitutional because it limited violated his rights. (http://smartgunlaws.org/gun-laws/the-second-amendment/the-supreme-court-the-second-amendment/dc-vs-heller/). This is a valid argument, but you have to think about all the crime and accidents that happen due to gun violence and how this will reduce this from happening. Gun control is a foundation for a safe society in the United States. No one wants guns to end up in the wrong hands, and without gun control the chance of this is much higher than with gun control. By putting these background and medical checks in place, someone mentally unstable can not get a gun. This is why gun control betters the people of the United States.
