They say time flies when you are having fun! Throughout the many years since the clock was made it has helped people in numerous different ways. Eli Terry invented the clock, the clock made telling time much easier and more accurate. When the clock was first invented it was nowhere near as advanced as it is now. Back then clocks were just a circle with arrows and roman numerals usually inside of a wooden box, nowadays, clocks appear in different ways such as alarm clocks and time on phones and computers. In addition, Eli Terry was born on April 13, 1772, in East Windsor, Connecticut. He had passed away on February 26, 1852, in Plymouth, Connecticut (Betts). The man who was credited with the invention of the first shelf clock mechanism was Eli Terry.  He was born in Connecticut and he was a very talented clockmaker and at the age of 14 he apprenticed a master clockmaker. Eli Terry had first invented the mechanical clock mechanism and was awarded the patent in his home town in Connecticut (“Eli Terry Biography”). Furthermore, states that the clock is, “an instrument for measuring and recording time, especially by mechanical means, usually with hands or changing numbers to indicate the hour and minute: not designed to be worn or carried about” (“Clock”). The clock is used to keep time, such a simple thing can help to endless extents. The clock can be used to make sure you are on time for something such as school or work or even knowing when something will be over. The National Watch and Clock Museum states that, “They have two important parts: a mainspring and a pendulum. Mechanical clocks are wound with a key, and this tightens the mainspring. As the mainspring unwinds, its energy turns gears which cause the hands to move. The pendulum keeps time and ensures that the gears move at the right pace: second by second,” (“How Does it Work”). Next, The clock has done so much for people throughout the many years it has been created. It is used for numerous different things as I had stated earlier on in the essay. Time helps out a lot with just simple things in life, although, many people take having the ability to keep time for granted, without it, people would have a lot of trouble with their everyday lives. Having the ability to tell time has changed over time drastically from using the sun to tell from sunrise to sundown, where the sun is in the middle of the earth it is around noon, to just looking at a phone or using a simple clock just to be able to tell what time it is sometimes down to the very second. Way back then, they didn’t even know what hour it was. In conclusion, the clock has been used for a very long time, and it has also helped in tremendous ways. Let alone the fact that they use to just have to use the sun to tell time. Although the clock is old, it has developed a lot over the years. Such a simple item can help in so many different ways and make life easier. Eli Terry invented the mechanical clock mechanism to help people and it rightfully did. He had spent most of his life on clock making and he was successfully given around 10 patents for making clocks and revisions to the different versions of clocks he had made (“Eli Terry Biography”). He had a genius idea by creating what he did and the clock will be forever used whether it is in just one way or one of the many different ways you can tell or keep time. Time goes by fast when you think about it!
