Traffic congestion is one of the major problems in most of the cities around the world, especially in developing regions. Planners and engineers, after examining the situation, suggest that development and maintenance of highways and roads is not enough to cope with the growing traffic demand. Many alternatives have been proposed to solve the problem of traffic congestion and the most recommended is to promote “walkability” and “pedestrianization” throughout the world.Q1

Walkability refers to the safety, security, economy, and convenience of traveling by foot. It is the extent to which the built environment is friendly to the presence of people living, shopping, visiting, enjoying or spending time in an area. Q2 It can be generally defined as the measure of suitability of an area for walking. It is a green mode of transport that not only reduces congestion, but also has low environmental impact, conserving energy without air & noise pollution. It is also a socially equitable mode of transport that is available to a majority of the population, across classes, including children & seniors.

Walkable neighbourhood is one of the most important features of the concept of smart growth planning. Walkable neighbourhood is also a basic principle of many urban planning concepts like new urbanism, new pedestrianism, car-free movement and intelligent urbanismQ4 . Many conferences and seminars are arranged worldwide to encourage walkability within neighbourhoods. A yearly conference named “Walk21: Walking Forward in the 21st Century” is held in a different country every year since 2000 to promote walking.
